"Divergent" Movie Review

Review: I got the chance to see an advanced screening of Divergent in Chicago, which was one of the coolest experiences of my life. The actors were forty minutes late and it was a ton of standing in uncomfortable heels. I didn't get to meet Shailene and Theo because they needed to start showing the movie. I did get to talk to Ansel, who is just adorable in person. What made my night was meeting Veronica Roth (a.k.a. one of the coolest human beings on the planet!) and she signed my copy of Divergent. It was so cool.

Although my seats were kind of terrible—front row to the left—I still enjoyed the movie.

The film stayed true to the book for the most part, but when it did stray it got kind of bad. Like all movies, they had to cut some things, but many of the things they added to make things clearer were just confusing.

The cast was perfect. Initially, I'd had my doubts about a lot of them, but they were all spot on. Shailene Woodley may never look like how I pictured Tris, she did an excellent job of playing her in the movie. Theo James and Ansel Elgort were also great fits for their characters. All the characters, not just the big names, were all so much better than anticipated and they were my favorite part of the movie.

Seeing a book I've loved so much come to life as a movie is always such a bittersweet experience for me. Nothing ever lives up to how fantastic the book was, but, at the same time, the movie is incredible in it's own way.
