"The Giver" Movie Review
I was lucky enough to attend the first public screening of The Giver in Chicago after briefly meeting Brenton and Odeya at Navy Pier. They were both incredible and it was so cool meeting such talented actors even if I didn't get to get a signed poster (I still got a poster).
Based On: The Giver by Lois Lowry
Rating: PG-13
Starring:
Brenton Thwaites as Jonas
Odeya Rush as Fiona
Genre: Sci-Fi
Synopsis: In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the "real" world.
(Summary from IMDb)
Review: This movie did deviate from the book, but what book-to-movie doesn't? They aged up the characters from 12 to 16, but it's understandable and worked well with how they worked to make the movie a little more dramatic from the book. None of the changes were bad and all helped the page to screen transition.
The most important quality in to any book-to-movie adaption is staying true to the spirit of the book and The Giver did that. The book is supposed to make you think and appreciate life as it is. The movie does that with amazing and beautiful visuals of both horrible tragedies and moving moments. It's truly beautiful and I'll admit to crying a little bit.
It's definitely worth seeing.
